Homage To Nature
Henry Brandt painted seven of the earliest paintings at Lane Tech. These were created around 1913. Brandt was born in Germay in 1862 and studied with his father, then at the Royal Academy in Berlin. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1882 and worked primarily as a scenery (set?) painter in Moline Illinois, then moved to Chicago in the 1920s. Native American Theme
This mural in Lane Tech's library was created by Jefferson League in 1944. Student Jim Stephnanidis is credited with assisting in its creation. This painting most likely has multiple meanings, but the one that makes the most sense, considering it is in the school's library , is the the theme of the industrious student. This theme would suggest that the victorious Native American is symbolic of the industrious student, and the defeated Native American is the lazy and unmotivated student. John Walley of the Works Progress Administration created this mural for the fire curtain in Lane's auditorium between 1936 and 1937.
Fire Curtain Restoration1970's
The fire curtain was painted over in the 1970s with this abstract design. Resoration in the 1990s restored it to its original 1930s splendor.
